There are nearly 500 election races on Nov. 8, including 34 seats in the U.S. Senate and the entire U.S. House of Representatives—435 seats, and now is the time to show up and vote!
The buzz is that there could be another shift in party control in both chambers, and it’s important that ACA International members vote and advocate for important issues that could impact the accounts receivable management (ARM) industry.
Democrats currently have a narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and Republicans only need a few seats to gain control. Considering not a single Republican incumbent lost in the 2020 election, and they were able to pick up 13 seats despite losing at the top of the ticket, Republicans are well poised to make that happen.
There are also several election races at the state level, including 36 governors, 30 state attorneys general and more than 6,000 state legislators on the ballot across the U.S.
Possible Election Outcomes
Nadeam Elshami, who served for 25 years in Congress, departing as chief of staff to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Brian Wild, who worked in the White House in the Bush administration and as chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., as well as in many other roles as a congressional staffer, provided their election predictions at ACA International’s Fall Forum and Expo in Chicago last week.
Elshami and Wild’s bipartisan debate covered elections in Georgia and Pennsylvania and the likelihood the Senate will flip from a Democrat to Republican majority.
Elshami said it could be a 50/50 split in the Senate, meaning a runoff election, and Wild said he thinks Republicans could secure the majority.
Once the dust is settled from the election results, Elshami said three big federal priorities will need to be passed, including the National Defense Authorization Act, government funding to avoid a shutdown, and the debt limit.
When the 118th Congress starts and new members are sworn in, Wild and Elshami said it can be expected that regulatory agencies are going to try to promulgate rules quickly and the Biden administration will move on executive orders—making for a very busy six months come January 2023.
