The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is collecting public feedback on improving public engagement in government through May 17.
The new initiative, shared by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, asks for ideas on how federal agencies can become more effective, consistent, and equitable in how to engage with the public.
“Federal laws and executive directives require agencies to frequently consult with the public to shape policies and actions,” according to the website for the initiative, Performance.gov. “However, these consultation efforts may be perceived as inaccessible or disconnected from stakeholder interests and priorities.”
Performance.gov is a site that allows the public to learn more about the President’s Management Agenda (PMA), the federal performance management framework, and the federal goal-setting process to define success and drive progress in key management areas and priorities. The federal government uses the framework to manage the organizational performance of federal agencies and achieve the vision set out in the PMA.
“The public input would help develop a federal framework, guidelines, and leading practices for public participation and community engagement (PPCE) activities to help federal agencies more broadly and meaningfully engage with you and your communities,” according to the OMB.
PPCE activities open for feedback include:
- Notice and comment processes.
- Requests for information.
- Listening sessions.
- Customer feedback surveys.
- User research.
- Other activities to inform the public of regulations, policies, and program and service designs.
The OMB welcomes input from a diverse and wide array of stakeholders, including individuals and private, advocacy, nonprofit, and philanthropic organizations.
ACA International members are encouraged to submit comments, which are due by Friday, May 17, individually and/or by providing input to ACA’s advocacy team at [email protected].
Options to submit comments include through the Federal Register or an online form.
The OMB will also host a listening session for the public to learn more and/or provide input on the initiative, with details coming soon.
