Consumer Financial Protection Bureau staff and members of the Consumer Advisory Board (CAB) will discuss “medical debt abuse” Wednesday as part of the CAB’s monthly meeting.
The meeting begins at 1 p.m. EDT with remarks from CFPB Director Rohit Chopra, followed by the medical debt discussion from 1:30 to 2:35 p.m. EDT.
You can RSVP for the meeting here by noon EDT April 5 to listen online.
Speakers for the medical debt discussion include:
- Leigh Phillips, SaverLife, Chair of the Consumer Advisory Board.
- Desmond Brown, deputy associate director, CFPB Office of Consumer Education.
- John McNamara, assistant director, Consumer, Credit, Payments, and Deposits Markets, CFPB Office of Markets.
- K (Gandhi) Eswaramoorthy, debt collections program manager, CFPB Office of Markets.
The CFPB released a report about the U.S. medical billing system and the credit reporting infrastructure connected to medical debt in March, ACA International previously reported. It also held a virtual panel discussion on medical billing and collection practices with Chopra, U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., and consumer advocates in Georgia, ACA previously reported.
ACA has continued its outreach and advocacy on this report, in addition to its response to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion after they decided, effective July 1, 2022, to no longer include medical debt that was paid after it was sent to collections on consumer credit reports and other changes.
ACA will follow the CAB meeting discussion and provide an update in ACA Daily.
