Observed annually in October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) recognizes and celebrates the achievements made by the country’s current and former disabled workers and highlights inclusive, supportive workplace policies and practices.
The topic for NDEAM 2022 is “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation,” in acknowledgment of the significant role that individuals with disabilities play in a diverse and inclusive American workforce, according to What Can You Do?, a campaign for disability employment led by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP).
ACA International’s Collector magazine recently featured an article on hiring people with disabilities. ACA member Elizabeth Vidas, assistant vice president, training and quality assurance for Sunrise Credit Services, explains why expanding your talent pool is good for business. You can read the article here.
This month is a fitting time to raise awareness of disability employment challenges and to recognize the many contributions made by Americans who have disabilities, but the true spirit of NDEAM and ODEP lies in the celebrations that take place at the local level across the country each year. The Campaign for Disability Employment encourages participation from businesses of all sizes and across all sectors.
Suggestions to participate in NDEAM range from putting up educational posters in the office to implementing a disability education program. Regardless of how you choose to participate, you’ll be making a significant contribution to creating a more diverse workplace where every employee is valued for their skills every day of the month.
