Senate Majority Whip John Thune, R-S.D.?the second highest ranking Republican in the Senate?has been tapped to serve as chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet in the 116th Congress.
Republican Conference rules prohibit the whip from simultaneously serving as a committee chair, therefore this month Sen. Thune will relinquish his role as leader of the Senate Commerce Committee, according to a news release from Thune’s office.
The new chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., selected Thune for the subcommittee, which oversees matters related to technology and the telecommunications industries.
“As I pass the torch to a new chairman of the Commerce Committee, I am eager to continue working on all of the important issues we’ve advanced over the last four years, particularly those that have had a direct effect on South Dakota,” Thune said in the news release.
