In an effort to raise funding and awareness for suicide prevention, ACA International member Mike Ginsberg and his wife, Tammi, have accepted the admirable challenge of co-chairing the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) Montgomery County Walk. Montgomery County, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C., is one of many communities across the country holding similar fundraising events this fall as part of AFSP’s nationwide “Out of the Darkness” community walks campaign. The Montgomery County walk is Sept. 22.
“Tammi and I are involved in this important campaign because we recognize that too many individuals are suffering in silence and not aware of resources available for them,” Ginsberg said. “In our first year co-chairing the event, we’ve set a lofty goal to raise $80,000. With the help of accounts receivable management industry professionals and their friends and families—I know we can do it!”
Money raised through the campaign will allow the AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss, according to the organization’s website.
Here are a few startling facts about suicide rates across the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- 47,173 Americans died as a result of suicide in 2017
- On average, there are 129 suicides in the U.S. each day
- Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S.
- Suicide is the second leading cause of death for individuals ages 15-34; and the fourth leading cause of death for people 35-54
- Suicide and self-inflicted injury cost the U.S. $69 billion in 2015
