Building on momentum of the growing Loomer-Mortenson Scholarship program, the ACA International Education Foundation in July awarded 35 high school and college students with a total of $50,000 in funding to further their education for the upcoming school year.
A record number of applicants turned out this year thanks to increased interest among ACA members and the foundation’s successful efforts to spread the word about this valuable opportunity.
Support also comes from ongoing Collector’s Challenge events planned by ACA members across the country—from bake sales and cooking contests to creative car shows and fundraising events—to fund the scholarships created in the memory of ACA member Robert E. Loomer, a dedicated instructor, and ACA staff member Irvin “Dempsey” Mortenson.
As a result, the foundation banked enough money to continue to offer more students financial assistance to offset the cost of higher education. Collector’s Challenge is an annual fundraiser in which ACA members hold contests and other events to raise money for the scholarship program.
Scholarship applicants had to be current employees of a company affiliated with the accounts receivable management industry or the child of an employee. Winners were selected based on their cumulative grade point average and a two- to three-page essay on the topic of the value of consumer credit to our nation’s economy.
Klaudia Greer, currently studying at Florida State University in Tallahassee, won the $10,000 scholarship. Her parent is employed by SHERLOQ Financial in Tampa, Florida.
The $5,000-second place scholarship was awarded to Trevor Arco at Mississippi State University. Arco’s parent is employed by Optio Solutions/CrossCheck Inc., in Petaluma, California.
The foundation board presented a third place $3,000 scholarship to Samisha Elysee at the State University of New York Oswego. Elysee’s parent is employed by Sunrise Credit Services in Farmingdale, New York.
The foundation also awarded 32 scholarships of $1,000 each to:
