The U.S. Senate voted along party lines to confirm Alvaro Bedoya to serve on the Federal Trade Commission, bringing it to a 3-2 Democratic majority.
The Senate voted 51-50 to approve Bedoya’s term and Vice President Kamala Harris made the tie-breaking vote, Politico reports.
The vote adds “a progressive privacy advocate to the agency and [restores] a Democrat majority at a time when the FTC is poised to take on corporate giants in industries such as tech,” according to the article.
Bedoya replaces Rohit Chopra, now director of the CFPB.
Politico reports Bedoya is expected to focus on an updated data privacy rulemaking during his term on the FTC.
