The long-term financial effects of the Affordable Care Act are expected to be far-reaching. As the growth in health exchange enrollees increases, it is projected there will be an increase in residual balances, which could result in increased overall patient accounts receivable. High-deductible plans and patients' increased out of pocket costs are increasing the potential for patient liability and bad debt.
