Collectors working with consumers on medical and student debt owed to the state of New York are required to suspend collections for at least 30 days in response to the financial impact of the spread of COVID-19.
The suspension is effective immediately and also applies to “other state-referred debt,” according to a news release from New York Attorney General Letitia James and Gov. Andrew Cuomo Tuesday.
After the 30-day period, which ends April 16, 2020, the Office of the New York Attorney General (OAG) will assess the needs of consumers and may issue an extension.
The attorney general is also accepting applications “for suspension of all other types of debt owed to the state of New York and referred to the OAG for collection,” according to the news release.
Interest accrual and collection of fees on outstanding state medical and student debt are suspended until April 16 as well.
