New Hampshire Primaries End with Chris Pappas Emerging as Winner in a Crowded Field of Democrats Vying for the House Seat

Democrat Chris Pappas will face Republican Eddie Edwards Nov. 6 in the race to represent New Hampshire’s 1st District, one of 13 U.S. House districts held by democrats that supported President Donald Trump in 2016.

Chris Pappas, a member of the New Hampshire Executive Council, won the Democrat nomination with 42.2 percent of the vote in the field of 11 candidates for the House race including Levi Sanders, the son of Sen. Bernie Sanders. Pappas’s race was one of two key primary elections held in New Hampshire Tuesday; the other was the race for the governor’s mansion.

Pappas and Edwards, a former police chief in New Hampshire, are vying for the seat held by U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, D-N.H., who is retiring.

Meanwhile in the gubernatorial race, former state senator Molly Kelly secured the Democratic nomination and will oppose incumbent Gov. Chris Sununu in November, The New York Times reports. Sununu is expected to retain his seat, according to the The New York Times.

Leading up to Nov. 6, primaries remain in New York, Sept. 13.

Currently, Republicans hold a 236-193 majority in the House of Representatives, with six vacancies. Democrats need a net gain of 24 seats to reach a majority in 2018.

A poll from Quinnipiac University released this week shows Democrats are 14 points ahead of the Republicans in the House, according to The Hill.
