U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy will serve as House Minority Leader in the 116th Congress starting in January. McCarthy secured 159 votes over 43 for his opponent U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan Wednesday, according to Politico.
Additional leadership votes Wednesday secured the position of minority whip for U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and Republican Conference Chairwoman for U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo.
The win for McCarthy improves chances he could be named House Speaker after Speaker Paul Ryan’s, R-Wis., term ends in January, according to media reports.
“McCarthy has vowed to lead Republicans back into the majority over the next two years. If he succeeds, the chances that he’ll be elected speaker are significantly higher than they were had Republicans held the majority this year,” according to Roll Call.
Democrats will vote on their leadership nominations, including their choice for House speaker, Wednesday, Nov. 28. The final vote on Ryan’s successor will occur in January.
