From Collector: Shaping Our Future

For the last six years, ever since the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released its Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for the debt collection industry, I’ve wanted a crystal ball that would tell me the future. Now that the proposed rule has been released, we’re living in that future. We know that ACA’s diligent efforts to help the CFPB understand what you do and how you do it have not been in vain, CEO Mark Neeb writes in his column for the July issue of Collector magazine. This continues a long, proud legacy of our state and federal advocacy work, which I encourage you to read all about in the July issue of Collector magazine.

As you read through the proposed rule, we urge you to submit your feedback directly to the CFPB during the allotted comment period, which runs through Aug. 19. We will eventually know the effective date of the rule and you will have time to prepare for any changes in your processes and procedures. ACA will keep you up-to-date on when that will be and how we can help.

Many of you have been engaged as volunteers throughout this long process and will continue to do so. Thanks so much for your contributions. We are a member-driven organization that requires both members and staff in order to succeed.

But back to today. It’s vital that we, as members of ACA, continue to work together for the betterment of our industry and embrace the change that has been brought upon us. The clarity we’ve been seeking for years is now here and like any other form of change, it will take a bit of getting used to. One thing is for certain: The industry will be better for it; our companies will be better for it and our interactions with consumers will be better for it. ACA’s longstanding commitment to advocacy continues to help protect member interests.
