“Generally speaking, we believe there is some substantiation for the fear of a recession,” said Lese. “However, a lot of the [signs] are intangible or based on perception-related measurements rather than concrete indicators.”
As an example, Hannan pointed to the University of Michigan’s monthly Consumer Sentiment Index survey released Aug. 30 as one indicator of a decline in confidence noting that perceived or real uncertainties around the future of global policies can tip the scale in either direction.
