The Waco, Texas, police department recently discovered a scam that has been circulating the Internet in which false debt collection notices are being sent to consumers. The collection notices look very similar to legitimate collection notices and contain similar language as well. The notices even include a typical closing line stating the Mini-Miranda.
Although the text of the letter looks like a legitimate collection letters there are several red flags that can alert consumers the letter is not genuine. The red flags are:
- The letter does not reference a specific account or list why the monies are allegedly owed, only that it is a debt settlement.
- The sender does not reference any specific recipient from whom the alleged debt is owed.
- The letter asks the recipient to submit a payment by credit card or electronic check to a linked Paypal account.
Collection agencies should be aware of this scam and how to identify red flags in case consumers mention receiving a similar letter. If a consumer receives a letter that possesses any of the above mentioned red flags it is suggested the consumer delete the e-mail.
Any individuals that fall victim to an e-mail or online scam such as this one should contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
